My Story
Why I Race
I was lost in my career. I was broke in my finances. I needed something bigger in life. Motorsports gave me structure when everything else felt unstable. On the track, there were no shortcuts, only discipline, preparation, and consequences. The race track became a place where I could rebuild myself one decision at a time. I learned to trust preparation over emotion. Different people race for different reasons. There's no right or wrong but today, I race for two reasons:
To inspire others to never give up, and to remind and hold myself accountable that we race to become better than yesterday, giving no room for excuses.

Racing Achievements
Competing in the 2024 Caterham Motorsports Championship demanded precision, discipline, and consistency across race weekends. Securing pole position and a podium finish was the result of focused preparation, clear race strategy, and calm execution under pressure. The experience reinforced how marginal gains, teamwork, and decision-making at speed define performance when conditions are demanding and mistakes are costly.

Nicky, how did you become a professional racing driver?
I didn’t come from money or a racing family, I started from zero. I first tried go-karting at 10 years old but had to stop because we couldn’t afford it. Like many people, I moved on, forgot about racing, and spent years working a regular 9–5 job. In 2018, I decided to try go-karting again, this time as an adult. That experience reignited something I had buried for years.
Instead of waiting for opportunities, I built my own path by developing a personal brand, creating value beyond racing, and collaborating with sponsors who aligned with my journey. Racing became less about privilege, and more about persistence, strategy, and earning trust.
Do you need to be rich to become a racing driver in Malaysia?
It’s important to be honest here. Motorsports does cost money. How much you spend depends on how far you want to go and what you hope to get out of it. Racing isn’t like badminton or tennis, where you can progress with minimal equipment. Cars, karts, tyres, track time, and logistics all add up.
That said, you don’t need to be rich to start. Many drivers begin at grassroots levels, manage costs carefully, and grow step by step. What matters just as much as money is discipline, consistency, learning how to create value beyond driving, and being realistic about your goals. Racing rewards those who are intentional, resourceful, and patient, not just those with deep pockets.
How do you find sponsors for racing?
Before I got into racing, I worked in the advertising industry. From being a supermarket promoter to organising events and working with a design agency. That experience shaped how I approach sponsorship. I learned early that sponsors aren’t just paying for a logo on a car, they’re looking for value, alignment, and outcomes that make sense for their business.
Instead of asking for money upfront, I focused on building a personal brand, understanding what brands actually need, and creating collaborations that go beyond racing. Sponsorships came from relationships, storytelling, and proving reliability over time, not cold pitching or one-off proposals.
Should you buy and build a race car or rent one from a professional racing team?
It really depends on your goals. I started out by renting a race car for a few races. Renting is usually the fastest and cleanest way to get on track, costs are more predictable, the car is professionally prepared, and you can focus purely on driving and learning. Over time, I found a lot of satisfaction in building my own car. While it requires more effort, patience, and problem-solving, it teaches you far more about the machine, race craft, and ownership of the entire process.
Renting is about convenience and performance; building your own car is about learning, control, and long-term involvement. Neither is better, just different paths for different objectives.
Do you provide coaching and training classes to teach people how to become a professional racing driver?
I don’t offer formal coaching or training classes, as I currently have a full-time role and have other commitments. That said, I’m always happy to help where I can.
If you’re serious about learning or progressing in motorsports, I can connect you with the right instructors, teams, or communities that are better equipped to support your journey.
